Richard Long is an artist who makes his pieces through following routes in landscapes and making sculptures and taking photographs of them along the way.

The reason that I have looked into this artist is that I am currently thinking of carrying on with my maps idea for my final exhibition work. My dad suggested I look into Richard Long's work for some idea as I'm not quite sure where to take my work just yet.

I really like his work as I find the shapes and materials he uses very organic, so I think this works well as he is                                                                                                             interacting almost naturally with                                                                                       his environment.

In terms of inspiration I think it is a good idea to almost map out a journey through places artworks - almost like landmarks along the way. This got me thinking of orienteering and things like that, ie following a map or route to find different artworks of                                                                                                           mine.

I will definitely look to Richard Long for inspiration in regards to my final piece, although I don't think my works will be as big as his are. I could maybe make his influence work on a smaller scale, and maybe indoors as well.

Mark Bradford is an abstract painter working in America and is also one of the founders of Art + Practice which is an organisation to encourage engagement into art practice and also to help young people who are coming out of foster care.

The reason that I have decided to look at some of his work is because I am trying to gather a lot of research for my Studio Practice 2 Brief which I am currently planning on looking into maps.

Bradford's works are normally gridlike and features collage. The way he sets out his paintings reminds me of certain types of maps, and he has used maps in his work before.

I really like these paintings as although the meaning behind them isn't always clear, they are aesthetically pleasing and interesting to look at and because of his use of colour and the amount of detail he has put into it.

Rachel Maclean is a Glasgow based artist who makes videos where she performs her work dressed as different characters lip syncing to previously recorded audio, she also designs prints which feature these characters.

The reason that I am looking into her work is that for my final brief I don't really have a solid concept down for it but I wanted to look into Scottish Identity/ Culture. I first saw Rachel Maclean's work when it was part of the Travelling Gallery and it came to college. Her 'I Heart Scotland' exhibition which was featured dealt with issues surrounding Scottish and British Identity and Culture.

It had references to the then upcoming Scottish Referendum and the Scottish Commonwealth Games, and other issues concerning Scotland such as Golf, Wind Farms, Oil, The Jacobite Rebellion, Unicorns, and Nessie.

With my work I am thinking about tackling issues such as Scottish stereotypes, what it means to be Scottish and Scotland as a part of Britain. Macleans work is a great point of reference as a way to look into these issues as she deals with them in a serious way, but in a way that is very tongue and cheek. I think that this work is great and does highlight a great number of issues that are important to me and Scottish society.

Another thing that I like about this work is that the artist takes a completely unbiased approach towards it. It was only  few months before the Scottish Referendum when I saw this work and it had influenced a number of the pieces in the gallery, however I don't know what Rachel Macclean's status was of the whole thing. With her work she managed to highlight the issues that should be important to everyone in Scotland, whereas her views on Scottish/ British politics were completely hidden.

The travelling gallery also featured her video called "The Lion and the Unicorn" which discusses the concept of national identity through three characters, the lion (England), the unicorn (Scotland) and the queen.

What I've looked at this week is a collaborative project between three artists: Andrea Polli, Venaya Yazzie and Esther Belin which is called Binding Sky.

This project looks at how the environment around Navajo areas is changing due to the emissions coming from coal Power Plants. This sparked my interest as there are many things that I am considering for my final third year project and this combine a few of them.

You can download the app or get CDs, audio transcripts and maps from the front desk so that you can follow the route set out by the artists and listen to interviews of tribal members who talk of the spiritual and physical health of the Navajo people and how the coal-fired power plants have affected them.

This projects has elements of politics, the environment and ideas surrounding heritage and identity. These are all things that I am considering looking into for my degree show piece. I am considering journeying around certain areas of Scotland placing/ doing pieces of artwork and am looking at putting the idea of Scottish Identity throughout it.

The thing that I like about this project is that it is interactive and also educational and gets people to think. I also want my work to have these elements to it, so it is great to see it executed in a fashion that works and so I think this will help to germinate my ideas.

Geocaching is an online project which encourages audience participation.

I stumbled on this site whilst searching for various tracking methods as research for my final project. The reason that I looked into it more was because I want to make my piece include something to do with maps and have an element of audience participation.

How geocaching works is that participants can either "hide or seek" a geocache. The main point of it is once a geocache has been hidden, seekers may try to find it by using GPS coordinates and once found sign the logbook.

I really love the idea behind this project as it can get everyone on the planet involved, which even means that you can participate even when you are on your travels.

Projects like these remind me of the Situationists and their theory of derive and psychogeography as both of these look at the environment around us and encourage us to participate within it more rather than "drifting". I think this method is particularly fun and engaging.

The site even offers the chance for users to attend "Geotours" which are tours around unique areas designed to get users introduced to new locations whilst adding the idea of geocaching.

Maya Lin's work mainly focuses on ideas surrounding the landscape and the environment. I found this artist by looking into artists who look into identity and happened to come across Lin's work.

The reason that I decided to look more into her was because I am thinking about looking into my local environment and thinking about how to interact with it, and also I found her work really interesting. The way she chooses to display her work is the most appealing to me because some of them are quite simplistic to look at, but then reveal something more complicated.

I feel that her work will have more of an influence in terms of display rather than concept however her installations certainly generate a lot of interest in me and will make me think on how to take my work one step further.

Frank To is a Scottish artist whose normally works in painting.

However one of his projects in 2011 was looking at the plague doctors and part of his work was him dressed as a plague docotor heading from Glasgow to Edinburgh to his own exhibition.

This work highlighted a very important part in Scottish and worldwide history and also focuses on one of the most visually interesting and almost scary parts of medieval times.

 The reason that I am looking at this work today is that for y next project I am looking for some sort of purpose of going on site with my work, and I think Frank To's purpose here is very interesting. The plague doctors have almost become a forgotten part of out history even though they played a big part and do have interesting lores surrounding them.

 And so how better to remind the public of them than to go out dressed as a plague doctor.

I think that this is a very innovative way to both increase notoriety for his exhibition, and also highlight the importance of his work and that piece of Scottish history.

Sylvia de Swaan is a photographer born in Romania in 1941, at age ten she immigrated to the United States. She has also lived and worked in Europe and Mexico. Her work is usually focused around specific projects and follows themes that are common to her work. These themes are: identity, personal history, individualism and collective memory.

The project that I am going to look at is her photography series titled Return.

In these series of photographs she looks back on her Jewish heritage and her Eastern European background. In some of her images she uses a combination of old photographs and images from her journey. Some of these pictures are taken on the train journey between destinations, this shows de Swaan’s physical journey, but could also symbolise her spiritual journey into her heritage and ancestry as she returns to her family’s home.

In my next project I am looking into doing a sort of journey and also how to document some of it. These photographs are very interesting and document a lot more than writing down words could.

I also feel that they aren't typical documentary photographs but the viewer is still able to follow the narrative of the journey.

I am also still looking for a purpose for my work and I think that Sylvia de Swaan's purpose here is very personal and poignant as she is going on a journey retracing her family' journey.

Marc Isaacs is a documentary film maker whose films usually investigate people and their ordinary lives.

I first heard about his film Lift last year in our video skills class and thought that it was a brilliant documentary on the real people that live in the London flats and showed their real reactions to the camera man. 

The film documents the host of characters that all live in the building and shows how they increasingly more comfortable with the camera and the questions the camera man asks. 

The reason that I am looking at this artist is that I am both looking at how I am going to document my next project and also looking into the idea of interviewing real people or looking into real places, rather than how places are shown to be in the media.

Over the course of the documentary Isaacs doesn't move but just stays in the lift, which is an element of work that I am considering. I might try and go to the one space over a number of days and then move t a different one for another number of days.

Greg Colson's work is usually built up of objects to form a shape, for some of them he almost traces maps using them which are the ones I am going to focus on.

I really like the aesthetic look of these pieces and I find them to be a really interesting way to represent the maps that he has used. 

By looking at this artist I am not really looking for any conceptual ideas, more just more different and interesting way to display my work as I think paying a bit more attention to this might just give my work more of an edge that it has done previously. 

I like the way he has abstracted these maps to create works of his own, I like this idea as, although I may not use objects but I could abstract the shapes to create prints to go alongside my work.

So today's post is going to be slightly different as I am not looking at a specific project or artist but more looking into a theory and a movement.

The Situationists, or the The Situationist International was a European organisation who stood for social revolution, this group included artists, theorists and other intellectuals.

The reason that I am looking into this group is that they created a theory know as dérive or 'drifting' which is  part of psychogeography. This theory looks at how we explore our environment without much planning or thinking, you rather go where your mind takes you. I think that this could be an interesting aspect to add to my work as I was thinking of going out into places and leaving my 'mark' and I could use this as an inspiration on how to go about it.

In my non-place project I did look into this but didn't really do much with it as it more or less just opened the door into mapping and how people look at the places (or so-called non-places) around them.

These theories have also influenced apps called Dérive and Drift, with the latter also being available card based.

Alice Fox is an artist who works in organic objects found within the landscape.

The project that I am most interested here is her project titled "Gifts from the Pavement" in which she looks at marks that are found in the streets.

In my next project I am looking at the marks we leave behind and I was looking for inspiration in recording marks and think that this is a very expressive way to do so. I also think that this is a very good research and investigation  method.

I like how the artist refers to these marks as "gifts" as these marks are more than just insignificant marks, but these marks tell a story and provide a back story to how those marks came to be.

Her sketchbook also lead to another series called "Pavement Pieces"

I might use this a small research method, but I'm planning on making my own mark so I will need to look at previous marks as a source of inspiration. This project has actually made me think of a playing card that I found when walking home so I think I might further develop on this idea.

So this post isn't going to be an artist but mostly a sort of visual inspiration that I found mostly by accident. This idea of Tubism simply comes from editing or creating your own version on a London underground map.

So I discovered this article on a site while looking at some stuff about the Situationists, and found the idea quite interesting.

The writer of this article (Pierre Nadilon) was actually a designer himself and made the above images and made them "Tubist portraits"

Although this isn't a particularly new idea I do like how it's fun and lighthearted, and I could do my own ones relevant to my project, as I am planning on having postcard sized prints available for people to take away with them and these could be added to give the selection a bit of variety, that's if I'm even able to make anything like these.

Zarina Bhimji is a photgrapher and film maker living and working in London. The work of hers that I am going to look is her 2007 Turner Prize Nomination.

In these works Zarina Bhimji travelled throughout India, Zanzibar and East Africa and her photographs focus on the human influence behind the buildings and other objects in her photos.

Her photographs look at the history and stories that are attached to the buildings.

I also want part of my reflect the human influence on the world and what marks we leave behind. Another aspect that I want to explore is how we are forgotten but perhaps the marks will be left forever, sort of like the butterfly effect.

Stuart Brisley  is an installation artist who other works in other areas such as performance art.

The project that I am going to be looking at is his project called "Leaching out at the Intersection".

Over the course of 30 days, Stuart Brisley selected a bag of rubbish that had be thrown into a waste ground.

He would then rummage through the rubbish whilst analysing and categorising the items that were in the bin bags.

I like the way that the artist has spread out the items within the rubbish across the ground as it almost gives the piece a linear story and makes the audience look a bit deeper into the things that we throw away.

In my work I want to look at the humans and the thoughts and feeling behind the marks we leave behind and I think that this artist hasn't answered this question but has in fact brought it to the audience's attention.

Rachel Whiteread is a sculptor who works with casting around objects within our everyday lives in plaster.

The reason that I like these works as I think that they tell a story of who the objects belonged to or who used them. By casting around these objects she is casting the memories that surround them.

In my work I am looking into the ideas of human marks being left behind and so I think that this is a good thing for me to look into. 

Although I am not a sculptor I really do like this artists works as I think that they tell a great story and I hope that in my work I am also able to do this.

These works are also interesting to look at as we are constantly surrounded by these objects however never think about the space the take up or the negative space that surrounds them.

Robert Smithson is an American artist who works in a range of different areas from earthworks to photography and film. The works that I am the most interested for my projects are his earthworks, specifically his work titled 'Spiral Jetty'.

This work makes use of the materials that the seashore itself provides, for instance mud, salt crystals, rocks and of course the water itself. 

I do like this work ad what I find interesting is that it can be particularly long lasting, however it will eventually disintegrate because of it's placement.

These photographs are also themselves interesting as the segregation of the ocean creates different shadows and textures surrounding the spiral.

I am interested in this work for two reasons, for my project I am looking to make my own temporary marks within the natural environment, and also I researched the idea of Narcissus the Greek god and how he fell in love with his reflection in the river, so I am wanting to experiment with the idea of water and shores. 

For my project I plan to look more at rivers rather than the ocean as these are closer and easier to get to within my local area, and I am considering keeping it local so that my marks are more likely to go unnoticed.

The 100 Years Project is an online project by internet content creator Dana Roc in which she asks people what they want to be remembered for in 100 years.

This project is really interesting as almost everyone wants to be remembered for something, and there is a wide range for what people want to be remembered showing human diversity and personality.

The answers themselves were interesting because of how detailed some of them can be, like the person has been thinking a lot about it and thinking about it quite deeply, whereas some of them are simple one word answers.

For my project I am interested in looking into why and in what ways we want to be remembered and so I think this project is a good piece of research to have.

However the point that I want to make with this project is that we will be forgotten and that that isn't necessarily a bad thing. 

I am planning on making my mark being somehow related to the ways that we try to be noticed and remembered amidst the crowd.

Seunghwui Koo is a Korean artist, in her statement on his website she speaks about how her family had a butchers shop and how a pig's head was a regular sight for her.

In his pig series she uses the symbols of the pigs heads to represent her experiences from living in New York City. The heads themselves draw connotations of greed and gluttony.

The series that I am looking at is her pig series titled "Narcissism" as I am interested in this idea for my upcoming project.

I like the artists use of colour in this series as I think they make the piece very striking and represent the loud, bustling city life that exists in New York. These bright colours also remind me of the large billboards and advertising banners that I've seen in parts of movies set in large cities in America.

For my next project I might use some sort of symbolism like this artist has used to represent parts of the human ego and also this idea of narcissism.

Chiharu Shiota is an installation artist whose work I really enjoy as they can be quite thought provoking.

The piece that I am most interested in here in terms of my project is her piece "Over the Continents" where she joined together different shoes with red wool. 

Why I am looking at this piece in particular is because I want to look at the marks we leave behind as people and I think that what Chiharu Shiota is representing here with the shoes is human traces. The different shoes represent, to me, a wide variety of different people and what possible lives they could have.

I think she also explores similar ideas with these other pieces too.

What I like most about this artist's work is that these installations tell some sort of story about people, their lives and who they were, without any use of faces or any sort of personifying features.

Inspiration of the Week - Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei is a Chinese artist whose works normally involve some sort of protest, especially against authority and governments.

The piece of work that I am going to talk about is his installation and video titled "Remembrance"

The main aim for this project was to have the names of the students who died whilst in school during the Sichuan earthquake. More than 5000 children died due to schools collapsing and corrupt governments and shoddy construction companies were blamed.  

The metal from this exhibition came from some of the collapsed schools and Ai Weiwei straightened and arranged them to form waves.

Just after the aftermath he also went to the areas where the schools collapsed and photographed the debris left behind. 

However what I think is the most poignant part of the piece as a whole is the audio recording of the names of the students, to listen to the whole thing would take 7 hours and 22 minutes and it makes you think of the lives lost and the families attached to all of these names.

Ever since I saw the video (link below) talking about this piece of work I immediately loved it as it has layers of sadness, anger, grief and protest all mixed into one.

Inspiration of the Week - Damien Hirst

Damien Hirst is an installation artist know for his controversial pieces featuring animals floating in formaldehyde.

So I'm not really a fan of Damien Hirst's work however I do appreciate his themes and subject matter. The subject matter for "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" is the idea of death and how frightening it is to come face to face with it. 

The reason that I am looking at this piece in particular is because I want to deal with the inevitably that we will all be forgotten. I think that we want to think that we are important and will be remembered for a long time with the reality being that we will be forgotten after about three generations.

What I want to say with my work is that being forgotten isn't a bad thing and is just how the world works so there is no point in hiding from this fact and should move on.

Although I won't be suspending animals in formaldehyde, I do think that Damien Hirst has used a good visual to say what he was trying to say with his work.

Inspiration of the Week - Spaces of Remembrance

Spaces of Remembrance was an exhibition held at the Kunsthalle, Düsseldorf in which artists looked into the idea of memories and how we remember them.

I really like how these artists have investigated these ideas in their own unique ways of creating individual pieces that represent their own memories be it good or bad.

In my work I want to investigate the idea of memory and remembering, but from a slightly different perspective by looking at how we will all eventually be forgotten. 

I think that the above piece by Kadar Attia is my favourite out of all of the pieces featured in the exhibition. I think that it shows how fragile our mind and our memory formation can be as this piece is formed by using sand which its grains can easily be manipulated and moved around.

Inspiration of the Week - Jim Shaw

Jim Shaw is an American artist who normally works in both painting and installation

His exhibition here deals with multiple issues and different types of imagery, mostly inspired by his childhood home of Michigan. 

What I am looking at here is not so much the imagery or themes, but more looking at how the artist has displayed his work.

One of the biggest question marks that exists in my next project is how I am going to display my final piece as it is more of a documentary style project. 

I really like this particular area here and think that this has given me the most inspiration.

I think that having images suspended from the ceiling and also on the wall would add a form of narrative to my work and make people more interested in going to see it.

Inspiration of the Week - Wunderkammer: The Museum of Lost and Forgotten Objects

The Museum of Lost and Forgotten Objects is an exhibition that explores "the desire to dominate, control, and possess".

What I'm looking into for my project isn't so much control or possession, but more the idea of domination and human desire in general. So I thought that looking at this exhibition would help give me a few new ideas on how to deal with this type of subject matter.

I like the intricacy and detail that is within all of these objects and I think that because they are displayed this way it lets them tell their own story.

I think these pieces are quite interesting and all fit quite well with each other and I sort of think that they look like an old medicine cabinet as part of an olden day set or something.

Inspiration of the Week - Rashid Rana

Rashid Rana is an artist whose work is normally based around photography.

This is gonna be a shorter post because I only wanted to talk about one piece in particular and is sort of similar to an idea I had in my head. What I thought about doing for one of my ideas was posing in almost like "Where's Wally" type photograph to show how we are lost in the crowd no matter how much we try to stand out.

This piece here is simply titled crowd and shows a lot of people chaotically crammed together, alost looking as if they are all trying to fit into the photograph itself. I really like this piece as I think it does demonstrate how chaotic, loud and claustrophobic being in a crowd, as the viewer when they walk into this room will be surrounded by people.

Inspiration of the Week - Richard Prince

Richard Prince is a photographer and painter whose "New Portraits" exhibition I am going to be talking about.

All of these so called 'new portraits' have been taken from instagram and include some of the tags, likes and comments that appear below the photo.

These portraits offer an interesting insight into the person in the portrait themselves and also those liking and commenting on the photo.

What I like most about this installation is the way these portraits are displayed as usually these images would be seen on a small screen and normally only exist digitally. These photographs seem to be huge and take over their surrounding environment.

In my work I want to look at how people try to be noticed in general and online and I also wanted to explore the idea of the 'selfie'. I think that this works explores how people appear online and how this digital format is becoming one of the most popular forms of media and portraiture, and straying away from the more traditional methods.
