And the consistent blogging begins

So my plan is to update every week from now on, I'm trying to be more organised and consistent throughout all of my social media type accounts to give me at least some sort of online presence. I have started to update my instagram more regularly now and seem to be in a bit of a routine with it now.

Summer has been far more busy than I had anticipated. I've barely had a moment to myself since I started college, and even when I didn't have anything on - I still had to redo my room and gut out three years worth of crap.

However a couple of weeks ago I did help out at a summer school ran by my college. This was an amazing experience and has given me a great boost in my confidence in my abilities. It also helped me to fully establish that this type of work is something that I definitely want to do in the future.

I've also began doing some basic research into what I want to do for fourth year but this hasn't really fully taken off and I've just been doing bits and pieces (although I did buy a lever arch folder and dividers so I feel more prepared). I'm hoping to really get started with this over the next couple of weeks so I have more of a fully flourished idea of what I want to do by the time I start uni.

In terms of practical work I haven't done much, it's really only been a couple of drawings. One of which is a tattoo design I'm thinking about and another was mostly for fun/ am planning on trying out a cyanotype material piece with.

So that's all I have for the past few weeks,

First week back!

So it's time to get back into the swing of things!

So the second half of the Easter break wasn't really great for me because my dog got quite ill and then she had to be put to sleep. My motivation wasn't at a high so I never got much college work done. However I think I was needing a break as I had kind of lost focus and enthusiasm for my project however a bit of breathing space from it has made it a bit fresher in my head and I'm ready to throw myself back into it.

I started the week of by organising my work and photos etc. and I've also planned ahead when I'm going on my walks and organising my reports, and I'm also trying to get back into posting on Instagram.

I've managed to stay on track for my walks so far

During the two hour break we have I walked alongside the River and swapped marks. This was a test using a remainder of the marks I had made up for my last walk as I didn't find enough during that walk. However this one was a different story as I managed to find quite a lot.

Also branched a tiny bit further from home in my second walk of the week and went alongside the river Carron but a different way than I normally go. It was a beautiful day and a really successful walk.

I did a couple of drift walks, and I have now began my main mark swap walks.

I've also been continuing on with taking and editing photos of my objects for my catalogue idea.

So that's all I've got right now, I hoping this week to start buying furniture and go on more walks and that way I can start putting together my exhibition.

Inspiration of the Week - Richard Prince

Richard Prince is a photographer and painter whose "New Portraits" exhibition I am going to be talking about.

All of these so called 'new portraits' have been taken from instagram and include some of the tags, likes and comments that appear below the photo.
These portraits offer an interesting insight into the person in the portrait themselves and also those liking and commenting on the photo.

What I like most about this installation is the way these portraits are displayed as usually these images would be seen on a small screen and normally only exist digitally. These photographs seem to be huge and take over their surrounding environment.

In my work I want to look at how people try to be noticed in general and online and I also wanted to explore the idea of the 'selfie'. I think that this works explores how people appear online and how this digital format is becoming one of the most popular forms of media and portraiture, and straying away from the more traditional methods.

NB - all photographs here have been taken from the artist's site:

I do not own any of the pictures on this post.

Until next time

Investigatory Walks Begin

Heyy, so this week I have began proper developments and we finally have a little bit more of an exciting blog post heres :D

This week I have done some more research into remembrance and other things, however this is me sort of at the end of the research stage so I'll only really be doing bits and pieces now and then.

So I went on my first Investigatory Walk to try and sort of get a taste for what sort of marks I could expect to find and also follow the banks of a burn to look into my Narcissus idea. What I have decided to do is to write reports on each walk and then publish them on here, so stay tuned for that :P

Here's how my "Instagram inspired kinda" photos turned out, I think this does sort of work well as a sort of piece however I don't think that I will be taking this idea much further as I am straying a bit further away from looking at social media:

However also in the same topic of social media I have started my Instagram account where I am going to be publishing photos of my work and also try and get them noticed by sticking to the "rules" of trying to get noticed online.

Another thing that I have done this week is start my survey in which I asked people how they wanted to be remembered, the reason for this is I had a plan to go on a walk leaving the answers behind although I am still planning on doing this, I am thinking of making this project a little more personal.
Here's a link anyway if you want to answer it, I did find people's answers to be quite interesting:

I've been thinking a bit more about how to display my work and thinking a bit more about my exhibition. After talking with my lecturer I am planning on looking a bit more into cataloguing and making my own catalogue of objects that I have found on my walks. So I think that will be the plan for the rest of the week.

Bonus Sketchbook page :P

So that's all for now,
see you next time :)

Shameless Self Promotion

So as part of my project I have started an Instagram account for the work and photographs that I produce during this project. The aim for this is to follow the steps of trying to get more noticed online as part of my project is exploring the idea of wanting to be noticed or remembered.

So if ya fancy, gimmie a wee follow ;)
My username is traces_and_initials

Thanks

Research Week!

So seeing as this is the first week there's not much to report here except that I'm doing some researchy things and doing some mind maps in my sketchbook :D So I'm basically keeping on just keeping on right now.

The things that I have researched so far is some stuff on the runistic Irish language of Ogham that my lecturer suggested that I look at, and so far I have found it really interesting and am thinking about adding a bit of this into my work. I've also looked into the ways that people try to get noticed online through social media, looking at this I had a thought of editing photos etc to the tips that I have found online, for example apparently lighter pictures on Instagram get the most likes.

So anyway like I said not much to talk about here, but here's some of the pages in my sketchbook that I've finished so far :)

So anywayz I'll see yous all next week with hopefully some more arty stuff this time :)
