Life Update!

So, where have I been?

Well when I stopped posting I was up to my eyeballs in dissertation work, which was as you can imagine verrrrry time and energy consuming. So everything else kind of took a back seat, but all that hard work and stress was worth it in the end because... I got a first! I'm so happy as I put in a LOT of work into it and I'm glad I got a grade I can be really proud of. 

Anyway since then I've celebrated by chilling and going on a few holidays and enjoying the summer. Besides my part time job I volunteer at a couple of places now, a small gallery and at an art group, both in Glasgow. I've revamped my website to fit more with my professional art image and branding, and I think my Blogger page is next, just so everything is consistent. I'm now working towards setting up an etsy store to sell drawings and also looking at a masters for next year. So writing up C.V.s, proposals and personal statements is what I have to look forward to the next couple months. 

Art wise I've been practising and playing about with photography as I've been taking one photo a day for the first few months and plan to print them and stick them into a sort of scrap/sketchbook thing. I've also been working on a watercolour/ drawing for a present and I think I might play about with this style to sell on Etsy.

I'm also working on building up concept, workshop and artist folios. This is to help me with research for further study and my goal of working in community art. I also plan to write up my artist folio on this blog and also include some exhibitions that I've attended reviews. 

So I'm looking forward to what the rest of this year might bring - so watch this space for what I'm working on :D

Catalogue Book

So as a part of my exhibition I created a catalogue of all my found objects for people to look through.

The Final Exhibition

I'm now going to update on how my degree show exhibition went (finally).

Well first things first I was super happy with how it turned out, I put a lot of work into planning what I would do then tidying the state that the store cupboard was in, which was soon to be my exhibition space. It was really great to see all that work, stress and pain materialise into something that I could really be proud of and was more than I had planned it to be.

So what was my exhibition? 

For my walks I had decided to go with my marks swap idea and then put the objects I had collected on display which would be the bulk of my exhibition piece. I documented this process through photography which was then displayed in a photobook. Another book I had on display was a catalogue of every object I had collected for the project, including objects from my investigatory and test walks which were stored in a filing cabinet that people could look through also. 

Also on display were all my sketchbooks that I had used for the projects, my laptop showing the photos I had take and videos I had shot, and I also collected smaller things to put into test tubes and petri-dishes to show elements of the environment which the objects were taken from.

I displayed the routes I had taken for my main swap series by pinning embroidery thread onto corkboards in different colours to give the space more movement and add something else for the audience to look at. I also used this to give the piece more of a feel that this project was an investigation.

Using the windows as a whiteboard, I also drew on some of my routes and illustrated where I found some of the items and other important parts of the landscape.

The audience were also able to view large prints from some of my walks on the wall and also smaller photos on display on the shelf in the cupboard.

I couldn't be happier with how my degree show went and my grade also reflected the work that I had put into this project. I hope to continue with this theme next year for my honours project and I hope next year is just as successful,

Its been a while...

So I sort of abandoned this around Easter time I think because college work was piling on and I had to sort out my priorities and unfortunately I had to put this blog aside. However I am planning on updating this at least throughout my honours year and maybe even further.

Over the next few weeks I'm going to post updates on how my final exhibition turned out and what I'm currently working on for y next year. I'm also going to continue with my artist research that i started for my final project so stay tuned for that.

So I will see you around this was just a quick update to get me back on track :)

Easter update - Organisation and Preperation

On the last week before Easter I started taking photos for catalogue thing seeing as the college has better lighting in my house. I think some of them turned out quite well as I managed to get a decent angle with my tripod. I then began editing these to make them look better so that I could put them in a catalogue format.

I've also been trying to focus down what I want my exhibition looks like, and trying to think of if I want it to be museum like or a bit more clinical. I've pretty much decided that I want it to be more clinical so that I am more inviting people into my investigation and the can interact with the files etc.

Fist thing I wanted to get done over the Easter break was to get my pdp and essay stuff done so that i was free to focus my whole attention on my project for a week. Pdp took longer than I was expecting but I managed to get it done and I'm quite happy about it and I did manage to get my essay done but it was a bit grating but I pulled through and am still alive so there's that.

So my mind and my project have been a bit all over the place for the past few weeks. I haven't been on as many walks as I had hoped, mostly due to the fact that I have been so busy. The main achievement of this holiday was that I think I've got my head back in the right place, and I am now looking forward to really putting my teeth back into this project that I feel I have almost abandoned. There only like 6 more weeks left *ferociously holds back hyperventilating* but I think if I put my head down I can do it.

So what's left, what do I have to do in these six weeks?

1 - Walk.
Well I think I've got the walk idea down now. The main purpose for the walks will be to "swap" my mark for someone else's. So essentially for the next six weeks - do more of those.

2 - Buy furniature and stuff like that for my exhibition.
I think I've got what I want my exhibition to look like fully in my head - sort of like a clinical laboratory for people to explore. So I need to buy all that stuff, everyone wish Róisín's bank account the best of luck.

3 - Catalogue.
I want to have an online catalogue of all the items I have found available for people to view so I need to start making this. I do have some photos but I need to make sure they are all documented and then put online.

Well those are the main things at least, I'll still have other things to put in here and there and God knows I'll probably come up with some other idea that I'll need to do so there's that.

Inspiration of the Week - Richard Prince

Richard Prince is a photographer and painter whose "New Portraits" exhibition I am going to be talking about.

All of these so called 'new portraits' have been taken from instagram and include some of the tags, likes and comments that appear below the photo.

These portraits offer an interesting insight into the person in the portrait themselves and also those liking and commenting on the photo.

What I like most about this installation is the way these portraits are displayed as usually these images would be seen on a small screen and normally only exist digitally. These photographs seem to be huge and take over their surrounding environment.

In my work I want to look at how people try to be noticed in general and online and I also wanted to explore the idea of the 'selfie'. I think that this works explores how people appear online and how this digital format is becoming one of the most popular forms of media and portraiture, and straying away from the more traditional methods.

Inspiration of the Week - Wunderkammer: The Museum of Lost and Forgotten Objects

The Museum of Lost and Forgotten Objects is an exhibition that explores "the desire to dominate, control, and possess".

What I'm looking into for my project isn't so much control or possession, but more the idea of domination and human desire in general. So I thought that looking at this exhibition would help give me a few new ideas on how to deal with this type of subject matter.

I like the intricacy and detail that is within all of these objects and I think that because they are displayed this way it lets them tell their own story.

I think these pieces are quite interesting and all fit quite well with each other and I sort of think that they look like an old medicine cabinet as part of an olden day set or something.

Inspiration of the Week - Spaces of Remembrance

Spaces of Remembrance was an exhibition held at the Kunsthalle, Düsseldorf in which artists looked into the idea of memories and how we remember them.

I really like how these artists have investigated these ideas in their own unique ways of creating individual pieces that represent their own memories be it good or bad.

In my work I want to investigate the idea of memory and remembering, but from a slightly different perspective by looking at how we will all eventually be forgotten. 

I think that the above piece by Kadar Attia is my favourite out of all of the pieces featured in the exhibition. I think that it shows how fragile our mind and our memory formation can be as this piece is formed by using sand which its grains can easily be manipulated and moved around.
